MIND THAT FARM

I often liken employment to a farm field where you till the ground, plant your seeds, tend your plant and then wait for your harvest.

Imagine a scenario where a farmer just plants the seeds and then goes home to return in a few months for the harvest. I wonder what crop he would be gathering on his arrival. For a farmer to expect a rich harvest he would have to engage in the time consuming efforts of watering the plants, weeding the farm, feeding the plants with fertilizers and keeping pests at bay with pesticides. It is only upon following through on these processes that the farmer would have more confidence in expecting a very good harvest.

The question then is how does this relate to employment? On almost a daily basis I am confronted with a very common situation which I am sure thrives in almost every working environment.

Workers complaining about pretty much everything. About their bosses, about the job, about coworkers etc. I am not immune to this.

The problem with this is very simple if you complain about your boss, this would unconsciously affect the way you relate with him/her and this puts you on the back foot because if you do not have a positive relationship with your boss it is unlikely you would make much progress in that job. You will simply be passed over for someone who may be less brilliant than you, but more favourable to the boss.

When we complain about our work or colleagues we develop negative feelings towards them and this affects our productivity at work.

Often times we hear people say things like I can't be bothered, its not my business etc. Thereby failing to take any responsibility for finding a solution to a problem at work.

The question I have for you is, "If you cannot tend someone's field, who would give you yours?" we must approach work with focus and dedication as if it were our own private business. We must exert ourselves in ensuring that unnecessary losses are avoided and that we are making genuinely positive contributions to our work environment.

You might ask why should you do this even when you are unappreciated and being taken for granted. The reason is simple and double pronged
  • Focusing on being positive at work would increase your productivity and as you see results this would be healthier for you and even reduce work related stress. Being positive is a great way of rejuvenating your mind as you challenge yourself to be more efficient.
  • Training and development: you never can tell what the future holds for you. By exerting yourself at work you train yourself to deal with lots of issues and you also develop vital new skills which will come to the fore when you least expect it.
We must treat out work environment like our personal farm. We must tend to it with energy, dedication and focus. It is necessary for us approach work with optimism and positivity. By adopting this new attitude to work I hope we are able to reduce work related stress and have a better quality of life. I leave you with the quote below.
