Are we there yet?
The expectation that a child carries as they are travelling on a journey is often conveyed in that simple question. Are we there yet? It conveys expectation, excitement, hope, joy and so much and of course disappointment when you say, Not yet.
We are approaching a New Year which I am sure on a level carries its own excitement and expectations. Sometimes we get so enthused that we, just like the little child are asking, Are we there yet?
The question to be posed though is not about the journey but rather, the destination. When we get there what activities are we expected to engage in, what is the purpose of the journey and what sort of accommodation should we be expecting.
Unlike the child, that is buried in expectations we however have a much higher responsibility to ourselves that we must undertake entering a new year, with as much direction and clarity as we can afford.
It is scarcely sufficient to have only hope and expectations for the new year which are not accompanied with at the minimum, a sketch of a plan that details in specifics the achievements we aim for in the new year.
We must start from a place of appreciation for the achievements we have gained in the current year. This acts as a propeller, giving us the energy to advance into the new year with confidence and self belief.
It is necessary to take a step back and reflect on the challenges we have overcome so far and a deep appreciation for the people who have either helped us surmount these challenges or supported us through the journey.
With renewed faith and confidence, we can then make plans for the new year. It is also good to create quarterly plans, which will make the goals smaller and easier to focus on.
As we embark on the journey of 2018 it is not time for weeping over the things that didn't work out in 2017 or the many situations we could have handled differently. It is time to celebrate the fact that despite and in-spite all these situations, we are alive, we are here today and we have the lamp of hope.
I look forward to welcoming you into the new year. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU
